Caithness and Sutherland (UK Parliament constituency)

April 15th, 2018

Caithness and Sutherland was a county constituency of the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom from 1918 to 1997. It elected one Member of Parliament (MP) by the first past the post system of election.

The constituency was created by merging the constituencies of Caithness and Sutherland and the Dornoch and Wick components of the Wick Burghs constituency.

In 1997 the constituency was superseded by the creation of Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross, which merged Caithness and Sutherland and the Easter Ross area of Ross, Cromarty and Skye.

Caithness and Sutherland was geographically the largest constituency in the United Kingdom.

The creation of Caithness and Sutherland as a single constituency was a part of a package of boundary reform also affecting many other parts of the United Kingdom. The reform was the first since the Redistribution of Seats Act of 1885, and its main aim was to make constituencies more equal in terms of the sizes of their electorates.

When created the constituency covered the county of Caithness and the county of Sutherland, including the burghs of Dornoch, Thurso and Wick.

In 1975 counties and burghs were abolished and the constituency became an area within the Highland region. The region included two new local government districts, called Caithness and Sutherland. The Caithness district was entirely within the constituency. The Sutherland district had a small area, the Kincardine electoral division, within the Ross and Cromarty constituency Runner Waist Pack.

Constituency boundaries were redrawn in 1983 designer glass water bottles, and the Caithness and Sutherland constituency was enlarged to cover the whole of the Sutherland district.

In 1996 the districts were abolished and the Highland region became a unitary council area. Throughout the remainder of the life of the constituency the Highland Council had area committees representing the areas of the former districts.

At the time of the 1918 general election, Sir Leicester Harmsworth had been MP for the constituency of Caithness since the 1900 general election

In the general election of 1997 Robert Maclennan was elected MP for the then new constituency of Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross, a seat he held until retiring from parliament at the 2001 general election, at which point he was ennobled, becoming the Liberal Democrats’ Cabinet Office and Scotland spokesman in the House of Lords until 2015.

Furstenberg boundary

January 5th, 2017

In potential theory, a discipline within applied mathematics, the Furstenberg boundary is a notion of boundary associated with a group. It is named for Harry Furstenberg, who introduced it in a series of papers beginning in 1963 (in the case of semisimple Lie groups). The Furstenberg boundary

, roughly speaking fuel belt reviews, is a universal moduli space for the Poisson integral, expressing a harmonic function on a group in terms of its boundary values large waterproof containers.

A model for the Furstenberg boundary is the hyperbolic disc

. The classical Poisson formula for a bounded harmonic function on the disc has the form

where m is the Haar measure on the boundary and P is the Poisson kernel. Any function f on the disc determines a function on the group of Möbius transformations of the disc by setting F(g) = f(g(0)). Then the Poisson formula has the form

This function is then harmonic in the sense that it satisfies the mean-value property with respect to a measure on the Möbius group induced from the usual Lebesgue measure of the disc, suitably normalized. The association of a bounded harmonic function to an (essentially) bounded function on the boundary is one-to-one Runner Waist Pack.

In general, let G be a semi-simple Lie group and μ a probability measure on G that is absolutely continuous. A function f on G is μ-harmonic if it satisfies the mean value property with respect to the measure μ:

There is then a compact space Π, with a G action and measure ν, such that any bounded harmonic function on G is given by

for some bounded function

on Π.

The space Π and measure ν depend on the measure μ (and so, what precisely constitutes a harmonic function). However, it turns out that although there are many possibilities for the measure ν (which always depends genuinely on μ), there are only a finite number of spaces Π (up to isomorphism): these are homogeneous spaces of G that are quotients of G by some parabolic subgroup, which can be described completely in terms of root data and a given Iwasawa decomposition. Moreover, there is a maximal such space, with quotient maps going down to all of the other spaces, that is called the Furstenberg boundary.

George Bechtel

December 28th, 2016

George A. Bechtel (September 2, 1848 – April 3, 1921?) was an American right fielder and pitcher in professional baseball’s early history who became one of the leading players of his era. He played in all five seasons of baseball’s first all-professional league, the National Association, and later played in the first season of baseball’s first major league, the National League, when the Association folded. He later became the first player in Major League history to be suspended for life for intentionally losing games for money.

Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Bechtel began his professional career in 1871 for the Philadelphia Athletics, when they joined the new National Association. Bechtel had played for the Athletics in 1870, and stayed with the team during its transformation from the previous version of the National Association. He batted .351 that season while playing in 20 of the team’s 28 games, as the Athletics won the season’s championship. Bechtel had also played for a couple of other Philadelphia teams during his amateur career before 1870. He was formerly of the Philadelphias in 1867, and the Keystones in both 1868 and 1869 wholesale sock monkeys.

The following season, he signed with the New York Mutuals, who had offered him a higher salary in 1872, and batted .302 and scored 64 runs in the team’s 54-game schedule. After just one season in New York, Bechtel moved back to Philadelphia, playing the next two seasons for the Philadelphia White Stockings with mixed success at the plate, batting .244 in 1873 and .278 in 1874. When the 1875 season began, he again moved, this time to the Philadelphia Centennials, and was their pitcher in all 14 games that the club played.

On May 26, 1875, after a 2–12 start, Bechtel and fellow Centennial Bill Craver were sold to the Philadelphia Athletics for $1,500. This is the first known sale of ballplayers from one team to another in baseball history. It is theorized that sale was actually an enticement for the Centennials to fold, which they did.

Rumors surrounded Bechtel’s play ever since the late 1860s, indicating that he was a very good fielder best water bottle for sports, one of the better fielders of the day, but his play at times became sloppy. Henry Chadwick once stated regarding his play: “At the commencement of the season, Bechtel’s play in left field was equal to any player, but, as the season wore on, he grew careless, and from other causes unnecessary to mention, he played poorly.”

On May 20, 1876, in a game against the Mutuals, he made three of the team’s nine errors, all three in crucial game situations. After the game, he became a “much suspected man” by the press and his team alike, so the team suspended him for crooked play.

On June 10, Bechtel wired teammate Jim Devlin a message stating “We can make $500 if you lose the game today. Tell John (manager Jack Chapman) and let me know at once. BECHTEL.” Devlin wired him back explaining that he was not that kind of player

, and presented the telegram to the team’s management. Louisville immediately suspended him from the team. Bechtel was picked up by the Mutuals and played in a couple of games for them before the end of the season. The National League followed the lead of the Grays and suspended Bechtel before the 1877 season, and despite attempts for re-instatement, he was denied. Devlin himself was also banned for life the following season when he and a couple of teammates were paid for losing games. At this time, it is unknown when and where Bechtel died, but Peter Morris, a member of the Society for American Baseball Research, claims that he most likely died in Philadelphia on April 3, 1921.

Édouard Lartet

December 1st, 2016
